Instructors: Brock Dolman and Kendall Dunnigan
Cost: $1500/$1400 if registered two weeks in advance (residential course). Some partial work exchange opportunities are available for this course; see below for more details. For registration information, click here. Click here to see a video about our Permaculture Design Course at OAEC. Whether you currently own property or dream of it, this two-week intensive course will immerse you in information, ideas and inspiration for how to design sustainable, regenerative systems in balance with your home ecosystem. You will learn the ethics, principles and practice of “permanent culture,” by exploring topics such as organic gardening, mulching, natural building techniques, forest farming, water retention and regeneration, erosion control, community processes, and much more. Using a combination of lecture, discussion, hands-on activities at OAEC’s 80-acre site, visits to local permaculture examples, and a group design project, you will have the chance to integrate and apply the concepts of permaculture during almost 100 hours of course time. Upon completion of the course, participants receive a Certificate of Permaculture Design. In 2009, OAEC enters its second decade and fifteenth year as a permaculture school, the most established and longest continually operating school of its kind in California. We celebrate having offered 30 courses to well over 500 students, and consistently hear feedback from graduates that OAEC's design course is a “life-changing” experience. For a more detailed description of our facilities, including information on what to bring, visit our Participant's Information page. Work Exchange: A limited number of work exchange positions are available. We award these positions to course registrants based on demonstrated financial need. Participants receive a $250 reduction in course fees in exchange for 20 hours working in our kitchen or doing other course-related support tasks. If you would like to be considered for a work exchange position, check the "Work Exchange" box on your registration form. Include a brief letter describing your situation, along with your $100 course deposit. If you are not chosen for one of the positions and cannot pay the standard course fee, your deposit will be fully refunded.

Go Local is fortunate to receive Judy Wicks as a featured guest speaker at this reception. Judy is founder of Philadelphia’s landmark White Dog Cafe, and an international leader in the local living economies movement. She is co-founder and board chair of the nationwide Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE), and founder of the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia and Fair Food – both originally incubated at White Dog Community Enterprises, a non-profit created to direct business profits toward building a local living economy in the Philadelphia region. In the retail industry, Judy was founder/owner of Black Cat, a retail store that featured locally made and fair trade gifts for 20 years, 1989 – 2009. In 1970, Judy co-founded the Free People's Store, now well-known as Urban Outfitters. Just after the 26th anniversary, Judy sold the White Dog Cafe in January, 2009, through a unique exit strategy that preserves the values of the business and assures local, independent ownership. She is currently working on a book to be published in 2010 by Chelsea Green. This reception is free to locally-owned businesses within Sonoma County. It's open to the general public to attend. Admission price is $5 for GoLocal individual members and $10 for non-members.Wine, beverages and hors d'oeuvres will be served as attendees mix and mingle. Please note that this training will run on Friday, October 23rd and Sunday, October 25th with a special free, open-to-the-public Energy Descent Planning Session Oct. 23rd, 6 to 9pm. Saturday, the 24th will NOT be a training day as there are climate action activities underway (see below). Building Resilient Communities for a Post-Carbon World The Transition movement is a set of inspiring ideas for creating an attractive and enticing vision of how our communities could be. The converging crises of climate change and oil depletion and economic instability cannot be solved separately, and they cannot be solved with technological miracles, but only by lessening our dependence on fossil fuels. This doesn’t mean a bleaker future. The heart of transition is the belief that if we engage with enough imagination and ingenuity to unlock the collective genius of our communities, we can choose a future that is more satisfying, just and sustainable than what we have now.

There is an international day of action planned for October 24 where people around the world will be demonstrating the importance of this number in creative ways. You can go to 350.org to find an action near you. Marty Roberts is helping to organize one in Sebastopol and invites you to participate. We will be standing in downtown Sebastopol with signs in a Burma Shave style urging people to take action to save the planet. We need people for shifts from 10:00 to 12:00 and 12:00 to 2:00 and after 2:00 to participate in a photo op nearby.
To sign up to be part of this fun activity, please go to http://www.350.org/
Or you can sign up on Facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/
The best thing is to sign up at both - the 350.org organizers want to know what is happening.
All creative ideas are welcome and help is needed to make signs and posters and banners and so forth.

heart&soul
We will be gathering again (yay!) to further the agenda of Transition Sebastopol Heart and Soul group--namely to facilitate and generate ways to support each other in our inner journeys as we travel these times of change.
We were inspired to see so many wonderful souls gather at our initial meeting and we would now like to continue the conversation started. In this next meeting, we will deepen the connections and discussions
This gathering will be simple and sweet, no frills. Just time together getting to the heart of what we want to see blossom and nourish our deeper selves. The gathering will be structured to facilitate this.
We will be asking the questions of what each of us is seeking and what each of us has to offer in relation to the care and feeding of our hearts and our souls. There will be an opportunity for you to ask for support and There will be an opportunity to offer your resources as well. We will be spending a good part of the time really sharing and connecting with each other deeply, in smaller “heart-circle” groups. You will also have the option to have these needs/resources added to a list that we will be creating to distribute to the larger community. Donations will be accepted to cover the cost of the space. We would appreciate rsvp's to get a sense of the head count, (but last minute decisions to come are ok) See you there! ~*~*~*~*~
