Please join Transition Sebastopol for our monthly Movie Night at the French Garden Restaurant! This month's movie is Carbon Nation and the Transition-featuring short film "Everything Is Going to be Fine".

free event/optional discussion following the screening

About the films:

Everything Is Going to be Fine is a short 15 minute film by documentary film maker Ryan Malloy that features Transition Sebastopol and its members, especially those in our Energy group!

circle_cow_bluecarbon nation is a documentary movie about climate change SOLUTIONS. Even if you doubt the severity of the impact of climate change or just don't buy it at all, this is still a compelling and relevant film that illustrates how SOLUTIONS to climate change also address other social, economic and national security issues. You'll meet a host of entertaining and endearing characters along the way.
  •  carbon nation is an optimistic, solutions-based, non-preachy, non-partisan, big tent film that shows tackling climate change boosts the economy, increases national & energy security and promotes health & a clean environment.
  • Public opinion is sliding the wrong way - far fewer people are concerned about climate change than even a year ago. We’ve made carbon nation to give a majority of people an entertaining, informed and pragmatic primer about why it’s incredibly smart to be a part of the new, low-carbon economy: it’s good business.
  • carbon nation's optimism and pragmatism are appealing across the political spectrum. While other good films have been about problems, blame and guilt, carbon nation is a film that celebrates solutions, inspiration and action.

A Wisdom Council Discussion Group of Transition Sebastopol

Calling All Elders, Earth Elders, Wannabe Elders, Soon-to-become Elders, or Interested Baby Boomers on up!

The Elder Salon is a nonhierarchical circle of peers. We’ll introduce the discussion with some thoughts from an elder voice or thought-provoking instigator to kick off our own discovery of what it is WE think and believe about the topic; what WE want and need now and in our future; what WE think should be the course of action and attitudes as we progress into and through our older years

WHY: There are a lot of new ideas about aging, staying youthful in body and spirit, and our role in society and local life. What have our generational contributions been and what is left undone? What are our mistakes and triumphs?

Localize! Sebastopol: The Economics of Happiness at Hopmonk

Join the Localize! Bicycle Tour crew on August 10th for The Economics of Happiness and live music in The Abbey at Hopmonk in Sebastopol, 230 Petaluma Ave. Doors will open at 7:00pm, and admission is $10. All Ages.

The event will begin with a brief overview of the tour, a screening of The Economics of Happiness will follow, and finally, Becky White and her whole band will rock the night away.

From August 1st to August 21st, Becky White and James Miller will pedal hundreds of miles to promote and document the Bay Area’s growing movement for economic localization. Staff from the Berkeley office of The International Society for Ecology and Culture (ISEC), Becky and James will screen the award-winning documentary, The Economics of Happiness, in several cities. They will visit community leaders and project sites throughout Marin, Sonoma and Mendocino Counties. They hope to show that local initiatives like community supported agriculture, farmer’s markets, strong local businesses, and local renewable energy, are not only good for our sense of well-being, but our economy, and our environment.

Five years in the making, The Economics of Happiness is a global tour-de-force—going beyond identifying problems, it outlines realistic solutions to our most serious crises. Localization, the film argues, is a powerful strategy to help repair our damaged ecosystems, our societies and ourselves. The film draws inspiration from the emerging worldwide movement for economic localization—urban gardens in Detroit, Transition Towns, hands-on education in Japan, community farming in India, cultural preservation in Peru.

The Economics of Happiness features acclaimed economists, environmentalists and scholars including Vandana Shiva, Zac Goldsmith, Bill McKibben, David Korten, Juliet Schor, Richard Heinberg, Bhutanese film director Khyentse Norbu, and the first Prime Minister of the Tibetan Government-in-Exile, Samdhong Rinpoche.

When: August 10, 7 p.m.
Where: Hopmonk, 230 Petaluma Ave., Sebastopol

Cost: $10

White and Miller will keep a detailed blog during their ride, and they will release a compilation of video footage after the tour. A short clip introducing the tour, images, fundraising, and details about screening events can be found on the blog:

Dear Friends,

This month's Sustainable Living Course with Angel Rodriguez is CANCELLED.

The next module of the course will be held on the second weekend of September. Details to follow in our next newsletter.

Again, the following event, which was listed in yesterday's newsletter, is CANCELLED for this month:

About the Program:
The Model of Transition for Sustainable Living (MTSL) program consists of twelve modules—one of which will be covered each month in 2011. Together they will provide an overall perspective on current thinking and technology, as well as practical skills for everyday sustainable living. The MTSL program includes a Workbook/Planner, a Reader, a Resource Directory, a Journal, and a series of Visual Aides.

The program has been designed to work in concert with local participating businesses and organizations. The mission of the program is to empower you to act; to transition you from wherever you are today, to a lifestyle that is highly sustainable, within the one-year time period of the course. Therefore, the program consists of 20% theory and 80% practical application.

The course, if completed, will:

· dramatically lower your carbon emissions
· save you money on utilities
· reduce your demand on resources
· assist you in becoming more socially responsible
· help you to become a steward of the environment.
