WHAT IS THE TRANSITION STYLE EVENT?
TRANSITION STYLE event centers around a kind of fashion or style show, though that is only its outer manifestation. It pairs Elders and Youngers (40 years or so apart), who will spend time with one another, an hour or two here and there over a couple of months’ time, getting to know each other. This provides an opportunity to know something of the other generation’s interests, values, and preferences, helping cross-generational inte-gration, while learning more about Transition and the fun of creating your own “look.”
TRANSITION STYLE culminates on a runway where these pairs make their way to a mike where they say a few words about their experience and how their "looks" contribute to Transition values. There will be visual arts displayed, we hope, from a newly forming Transition Art Brigade, music supplied for the show from Brigade musicians, including anything from hip hop or rap and older generations' music, say rock and roll or ‘60s music and in between. Poets may offer interludes. There may be performance dance or clear the chairs for a Transition Community dance afterwards.
Each person in the pairs will create their own personal "look" and they will help one another by going out to secondhand stores, flea markets, handcrafts stores, and/or their own closets to put something together or remake things to suit. This gives them something fun to do while they're getting to know how the "other" ticks.
Local thrift, secondhand and craft stores are being approached to give discounts to pairs who come in shopping together. It supports recycle, reduce, re-use and handmade plus personal style and freedom of creativity, all to come under the heading of Transition Style.
TRANSITION ART BRIGADE (working title as of now) is in early stages of formation. The first meeting for interested ARISTS OF ALL KINDS is scheduled for Thursday, April 14, 2-4 pm at Sequoia Village Cohousing common house, 459 Sequoia Lane, Sebastopol, off Covert Lane, opposite Pacific Market (Fiesta) and west a little, before Pleasant Hill. PARK ON THE STREET! Future meetings TBA.
The group will self-determine how they want to organize and operate, but may choose to be project-driven or to do pop-up art in different places, some performance, some visual, and so on. They could also operate as a Transition-related cultural arts support group.
We anticipate that this group will choose to participate as musicians, poets, visual artists, performance artists and designers in the TRANSITION STYLE event.
